You could have gotten lost in the castle, perhaps, or just did not feel like attending, or fallen asleep and missed the bell, or been waylaid by a stray Echo, or had your path blocked off by a truly vicious territorial battle between Zubats and jackalopes. Any real reason you can think of to not bother attending, as attendance is not actually mandatory.
