MEMORY LOSS & ROLES
MEMORY LOSS | |
Memory loss is a pretty self explanatory term. It means not remembering anything! So your character will not remember anything about themselves - their name, where they live, who their friends and family are, how they grew up, what sort of life they had, etc. Of course, just because a character doesn't have any memories, that doesn't mean they won't be completely unlike themselves! A character who is naturally kind-hearted and short-tempered will retain those traits despite amnesia! Whereas a character who started out one way and ended up the complete opposite due to canon circumstances might be more like how they started out, as they don't remember the experiences that changed them. Depending on how much they change before they remember canon events is something fun to plan and play out in a memory loss game. Think about what your character is at their core when so many things that shaped them are stripped away. Additionally, any emotions connected to specific things and events may not be inherent; for example, most characters will naturally have negative responses to something like witnessing a murder, so even as an amnesiac, will react the same way. However, if a character gains a fear and seething hatred of spiders because a giant mutant spider destroyed their village, as an amnesiac they probably would not hold such a fear upon seeing a spider until that memory is regained. Basics are inherently remembered by characters - such as speaking, reading, writing, just "knowing" basic knowledge (like what a dog is-- unless dogs don't exist in your character's canon obviously). Of course, if there are canon instances of things like a character losing their voice for a reason or learning something basic such as speaking as part of their story or arc, that can definitely be played with as well and they don't have to retain those skills in cases like that upon waking up in Kyriakos. Characters will feel their canon age - that is, what age they are apped and played at. Waking up with a single memory from their childhood won't mean they think they are a child. |
MEMORY REGAINS | |
Characters win back memories by playing in games that are run by the Echoes. Your character's soul has been "shattered" into pieces, so each game rewards them a piece of themself back. There is no particular order in which memories are returned to them. On rare occasion, special events will also reward shards. Memories and skills are in the form of mirror shards that are to be placed in your character's mirror, and appear in winning teams' mirror rooms after a game. All mirror shards look the same so it's impossible to fully know which shard belongs to who on a team until they try out different shards in their own mirror. All memories are experienced the same, regardless of if a shard belongs to that character or not. They're essentially reliving the memory from that character's point of view. They hear their thoughts, feel their emotions, see what they see. However, they can't suddenly get an injury if one happens in the memory itself! They're just memories, after all. If a character wouldn't be able to tell who a shard belongs to based on what they've learned about the character already, shards in the wrong mirror feel wrong to those they don't belong to, and right to those who do. Shards can be removed from their rightful mirrors for easy sharing, if a character is compelled to do so. All memory and skill registries are prepared and broken up by the players to their preference, and an easy reference both for them to keep track of what they've regained as when, as well as game runners when they're awarding memories to winners. Please refer to the about memories/skills section for more information about registries and more. |
CHOOSING A CHARACTER | |
Due to the team mechanic in Kyriakos, playing a character is a little different in that they're not essentially on their own and somewhat bound to certain others during the course of the game. There are many things to consider before you send in an app. After you've looked over the taken list and the queue to ensure your character isn't taken already, think about how your character will be without the memories that shaped them. How they'll respond not only to getting those memories back in pieces, but their development along the way in the game setting itself. Depending on how long you want to play a character for, apping main characters from long series obviously gives you more to work with for a registry, while a side character might end up with less. Similarly, choosing a character type is most important thing about playing a character. Consider how they'll work with their team. While all characters vary in values, please consider whether or not your character would work with their team in some capacity. Apping Evil Protagonist who will never listen to their team, sabotage them and never compromise on anything will inevitably lead to in-team fighting and strife, which is never fun for players involved if ir persists and there is no alternative to get Evil Protagonist to somehow be shaped to something less evil through their amnesia. |
TEAMS | |
Teams are the most integral part of the game and your character. Your character lives with their team, plays games with their team, support and rely on their team, potentially learn the most about their team as well as have them learn the most about your character through memory regains. Their one of your character's most important form of CR, and it's encouraged both ICly and OOCly to play with them often. Again, characters who cannot work in a team setting may not be the best fit for this game. However, characters who can be changed and benefit from certain dynamics and influence of their teams can be fun to play. While we want people to play characters they want to play, we'd like everybody to be considerate to what they're bringing to players already in the game. Each team is different, and mods will place characters on teams they feel will suit them best based on the characters there already. This is why queue wait times could vary for some, because while we try to prioritize firsts over seconds over thirds, we will not place a character on a team simply because a spot has opened up if we feel a character would not fit there. |
CATS | |
Cats work differently than the other teams in Kyriakos, starting with the fact that they're larger, with twelve spots on the team. Furthermore, while teams can make and break contracts with Echoes where patroning is involved, Cats are bound to the Echo(es) in control of Kyriakos - primarily Queen and Princess, though during the time of Nyssa's takeover, Nyssa. This is due to the fact that the Cats' role is to uphold the rules in Kyriakos and carry out tasks given to them by their patrons. They all possess a pendant upon arrival that can grant them one of seven powers. Cats' roles vary in games depending on what the game runner wants to do with them. So while sometimes they will be playing together as a single team, many times they are assigned to different teams to aid them. Cats are awarded memories individually rather than winning as a team, so you as a player must be in a game to have a chance to win, instead of a single Cat winning for the whole team. There are alternatives for Cats to regain memory shards, though. Such as having the power to offer quests and mini-games to the teams.
