potential apper here! how are canonly dead characters handled in game? by which i mean, not spirits or vampires or anything. just dead ones

would their starter shard mainly function as a revival?

Nope! You can just say their soul - while dead - still got rescued because it still existed somehow if you would like. Your starter shard can be a memory or a skill, and doesn't have to be used to be a revival for a dead character. It's the mystery of Kyriakos' magic that they get to be alive suddenly, albeit without their memories and skills.
